In the evening of October 10th, 1990, I went to the Brandenburg Gate and, after that, to the Reichstag, to join the celebrations of the German Unification Day. The quadriga had been removed from the Brandenburg Gate for restoration. I think it had been damaged during night of New Year's Eve 1989/1990. Some people had managed to climb it, that night.

Many people went to the Gate this night. Some showed "symbols" (a crossed flag of the GDR for example) to express their feelings, thoughts and opinions on the German Unification Day.

A clown!?

An organ grinder, proclaiming the idea of reinstating Berlin as Germany's capital. At that time, the decision to move the German government back from Bonn to Berlin hadn't been made.

In the picture on the right you can see costers selling everything that had anything to do with the GDR.

In the middle you can see a craned "Trabbi" with a flag of the GDR.
At around 10pm I walked to the Reichstag.

The field in front of the Reichstag wasn't too crowded yet. It was planned to hoist a huge German flag in front of the building at midnight. But at this time, the flagpole was still empty.

Loud classical music was played during the whole evening.

At midnight, to the sounds of the German national anthem, the flag was hissed. Every important German politician (the Federal President, the Federal Chancellor and the President of the Bundestag, amongst others) had gathered on the steps in front of the Reichstag. A little further away a big fireworks display took place. Some guests had brought their own fireworks, too.

Well then: Cheers!
